Tooth Eruption
Primary teeth/baby teeth show up between six months and 3 years old. Often the lower front two, followed by the upper front teeth. The corner and side teeth erupt by two years old, with the last baby tooth arriving close to three years.
This completes the full set of 20 primary teeth: 10 on top and 10 on bottom!
At six years old we begin to see some changes: loose teeth in the front and new permanent teeth even further back than the last baby molar. This is called the 6 year molar!
A simple way to remember when baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth replace them:
Front 8 teeth (top & bottom) permanent by 8 years old.
Back 12 teeth (top & bottom) permanent by 12 years old.
There is variation as to when each baby tooth is loose and falls out, but this is a very helpful, simplified snapshot of what to expect.
Baby teeth are important as they not only hold space for permanent teeth, but they are important for chewing, biting, speech, and smiling!
